Maoming Port lies in west Guangdong Province, along with the south coast of China. It is not only the center of the water and land traffic of Guangzhou and Zhanjiang, but also the hub of west Guangdong, which together create a very excellent location. In the neighborhood, there are the Pearl River Delta(east), Beibu Gulf(west), the South China Sea(south), Southeast Asia(over the sea), and the wide Southeast China and the Central China region to the north. As stated in the International Development of China by Sun Yat-sen, 1919, it is defined as one of the nine commercial harbors and described as a port “able to accommodate giant vessels”. It’s a unique fine deep harbor, with natural depth of water -15m, the coastline up to 220km, and the port coast 60.2km long. On land, it is 380km away from Guangzhou and 100km away from Zhanjiang, and thus recognized as the center of the water and land traffic of Guangzhou and Zhanjiang. It is 178 sea miles away from Hong Kong in the east, 246 sea miles away from Guangzhou Port in the north, 68 sea miles away from Zhanjiang Port in the west, and 134 sea miles away from Haikou. Maoming Port can be reached from all directions; Luo-Zhan Railway, San-Mang Railway, He-Mao Railway and Mao-Zhan railway are jointed here, which enables Maoming Port to be connected with South China, Southwest China, and South Central China; it is also accessible by Shenhai Expressway, 325 National Highway, and 207 National Highway. Along with the construction of high-speed railways in coastal areas in west Guangdong, including Bao-Mao Railway, Maoming Port will be the most convenient and the most economic channel.

As a national class A port opening to the outside world, Maoming Port is also an important regional harbor, an important hub for regional comprehensive transport system, a major import oil and gas receipt, unloading, transit and storage system in the port groups in the Pearl River Delta Region according to national coastal port layout and planning, a large coastal owner’s wharf in China as planned by the Ministry of Transport, and one of the four largest import oil receipt and unloading ports in China. There are three harbors at present, namely, Bohe, Shuidong and Jida, with the annual throughput in 2011 up to 23,060,000t; as planned, there would be 75 over 10,000 ton-class berths, with the planned recent throughput capacity of 60,000,000t, but 0.2 billion tons for forward plan.

For land scope, Bohe New Harbor starts from 325 National Highway to Liantouling, 10km long from south to north, 5.5km wide from west to east, and an area of about 50 square kilometers can be developed. Initially developed in 1994, with one 300,000 Ton-class Single Point Mooring device established at Liantouling, it is the first crude oil receipt and unloading system in China.

Bohe New Harbor with the objectives of building large and modern deep water harbors and serving inland China economy is planned to construct a batch of large, professional and in-depth wharfs, promote the development of petrochemical industry, energy, equipment manufacturing and other coastal industries, and develop into a main harbor in Maoming Port and a important comprehensive harbor in west Guangdong.

As planned, Bohe New Harbor will be divided into two parts, the western part and the eastern part; that is to say, there are two harbors basins in development layout. The eastern working district mainly focuses on establishing large and deep berths, while general berths are mainly adopted in the western working district. The harbor will build thirty three 10,000 ton-class production berths, including two 150,000 ton-class coal wharf berths, with one 100,000 ton-class coal wharf reserved; two 200,000 ton-class ore wharfs, one 150,000 ton-class ore wharf, and three 30,000 ton-class bulk berths; seven 100,000 ton-class general berths, two 100,000 ton-class container berths, and twelve 50,000 to 100,000 ton-class liquid chemical berths, with one 300,000 ton-class crude oil berth and two LNG wharf berths to be reserved.
